Every honest answer in technology comes with conditions.

The Qualified Answer is a decisions podcast for senior technology leaders - the ones who own the call, and the ones who execute it.

Each episode is either a decision case - a senior leader walks you through one real call they had to make, what they chose, what they traded away, and what they wish they'd known - or a solo deep dive into the mental models, frameworks, and patterns behind how consequential decisions actually get made.

Hosted by Simon Elisha - 35 years in enterprise technology, first AWS technical hire in Australia, 700+ podcast episodes, and decades of decisions (some great, some not-so great).

New episodes coming soon. Subscribe now.

Yes, with an if. No, with a but. Keep on building!

Here's what no one tells you about senior technology leadership: the higher you go, the fewer decisions have clean answers. No framework survives first contact with your org chart. No vendor pitch accounts for your actual constraints, and the honest answer of every expert opinion? It starts with "it depends."

But "it depends" is a cop-out unless you can finish the sentence. It depends on what you are willing to trade away. I'm Simon Elisha, 35 years in enterprise technology. First database technical hire in Australia, 700 podcast episodes behind me, and decades of decisions. Some great, some not so great. This show is not about technology.

It's about the decisions technology leaders actually make: architecture bets, vendor commitments, org design, build versus buy, the calls we're getting it right looks like luck. And getting it wrong looks like your fault. There are two kinds of episodes: decision cases, a senior leader walks you through one real call they had to make, what was chosen, what was traded away, what they wish they'd known; and solo episodes, where I unpack the mental models, frameworks, and patterns behind decisions and how they actually get made.

This show is called The Qualified Answer for a reason, because every honest answer in technology comes with conditions. Yes, if you have the team for it. No, but not for the reason you think. The unqualified answers, they're the ones that get you fired. This is for the leaders who own the call, not just the ones who execute the decision, but also the ones who carry it.

New episodes are dropping soon. Real decisions, real frameworks. No clean answers.

Subscribe now, and the next time someone gives you a clean, simple answer to a complicated question, ask them what they're leaving out.

That's the qualified answer: yes with an if, no with a but. Keep on building.
